Formula, sources and blank printable worksheet
National planning range: variable-speed equipment $500–$2,500; installation labour $100–$500. These are outer bounds across Fixr (31 January 2025), HomeGuide (16 July 2025) and Angi (16 September 2026). They are editable planning inputs, not local quotes. Connections, permits/disposal and tax need local scope and stay unknown. Add only charges not already included in labour.
QUOTE-2: add low endpoints and high endpoints separately for a planning range. Written quote total = equipment + labour + connections/controls + permits/disposal + tax. Missing items remain unknown.
Calculation version 1.0 uses historical engineering references for arithmetic, not current residential law.

Mark missing measurements Unknown. Keep exact model, source revision and assumptions with this worksheet. Report a calculation or source correction with reproducible inputs.

Pool pump replacement cost depends on what the quote covers. A bare pump price does not include fitting it. A motor-only quote may cover less work than a new pump and drive. Read the written items before you compare the totals.
Keep each cost on its own line. Include the pump and labour, plus any pipe or control work. Check tax and disposal too. Ask whether permits are needed. Use dated quotes.
Mark an item absent only when the quote says it is excluded. Leave a needed but unquoted item unknown. The worksheet adds known costs. It compares full totals only when both quotes cover the same work.

A sourced national starting range
The tool starts at $600–$3,000 for a whole variable-speed pump plus installation labour, before unknown local extras. Each endpoint is editable. This is a broad planning range, not an installed quote or a promise that every pump falls within it.
Three national cost guides supply the starting inputs, with their publication dates retained below:
| National source and article date | Variable-speed equipment only | Installation labour |
|---|---|---|
| Fixr, 31 January 2025 | $500–$1,200 | About $200 for like-for-like work; $250–$350 for a different pump or new installation |
| HomeGuide, 16 July 2025 | $700–$1,600 | $100–$400 |
| Angi, 16 September 2026 | $800–$2,500 | $200–$500 |
We use the lowest and highest published equipment endpoints, $500 and $2,500. Labour starts at $100–$500 on the same basis. Adding those gives $600–$3,000.
The guides cover different jobs and dates. This envelope is not an average or a statistical confidence interval. We do not adjust older figures for inflation.
Connections and controls, permits and disposal, and tax start unknown. Their scope depends on the job and place. Add a local range only for work outside the labour amount.
If ordinary connections or removal are included in labour, record that before entering zero on the extra line. Do not add the same work twice. Switch to written-quote mode when you have exact models and itemized offers.
Pool pump replacement cost begins with scope
Find out what failed and what the quote replaces. A new motor must fit the old pump's wet end and seal. The impeller must suit it too.
A whole new pump may need new unions or more space. Its controls may differ. Check the exact model in both cases.
The SuperFlo VS manual shows the parts and service rules for that model. It gives no prices. The current SuperFlo VST page describes a different model. Do not use one model's quote with the other's drive or size.
Replacement cost quote checklist
| Line | What the written quote should state |
|---|---|
| Equipment | Exact pump or motor and revision; state whether the drive is included |
| Labour | Fitting and commissioning scope, including old-unit removal |
| Connections and controls | Unions, plumbing changes and supported interfaces |
| Permits and disposal | Required items, included amounts or explicit exclusions |
| Tax | Amount or a documented basis |
| Warranty | Product and workmanship terms for the chosen seller and channel |
Blank cost fields stay unknown. Enter zero only when the item is included on another line or has no charge. Keep the quote and date with each sum. A price needs a clear scope before you can compare it.
Arithmetic example, not a market-price claim
An artificial example uses 400 for the pump and 200 for labour. Add 50 for connections, 25 for disposal and 40 for tax. The total is 715 currency units.
These are made-up sums to show the maths. They are not quoted market prices. The labelled example switches to quote mode. It does not supply the national planning defaults above.
The worksheet shows a subtotal and lists what is missing. It waits to compare full totals until both scopes are complete and match. A quote that leaves out needed control work is not cheaper just because its sum is smaller.
Check the duty and controls of the replacement
Use the pool pump size calculator before you choose a size. Read the new model's curve at the flow and head you need. Check the limits of each active device. The old horsepower label alone cannot show that a new pump fits the duty.
Check the voltage and control system. Check the pipe joins and space for service too. A digital drive may not work with the old timer in the same way. The timer guide explains how schedules differ. It does not give wiring steps.
Operating expense is a separate comparison
If the new pump changes the schedule, measure energy for the same pool service. Use the kWh tool and payback worksheet. Do not deduct a guessed yearly saving from the quote.
The new pump's warranty can depend on how it is sold. TradeGrade is Pentair's sales-channel product programme, with terms set by its actual policy. Pentair's TradeGrade policy sets terms for its named products. Check the exact terms. Do not assume the same cover applies to every online seller.
Keep the comparison reproducible
Save the date and model code with each quote. Keep the scope notes too. A changed code or missing task can make a new quote cover different work. Note the change before you add the costs again.
The manufacturer's technical sources do not supply live quotes. The national cost guides give a starting budget. Replace those ranges with local offers once you know the required model and work. Keep any excluded item visible as unknown. The subtotal then shows what is priced without hiding what still needs an answer.
FAQ
Can I compare motor-only and whole-pump totals?
You can view them side by side, but they cover different work. Note whether the wet end and drive are included. Check seals and pipe work too. The lower total alone does not show better value. Check fit for the duty and the state of the parts that will stay.
Why does the total stay incomplete?
A needed item is still unknown. The worksheet shows known amounts. It leaves missing costs blank. Ask for a written amount or a note that the item is included. Then update the record. A clear partial sum is more useful than a full-looking price with work left out.

If the filter is also due for replacement on an above-ground pool, compare the pump-and-filter combo options before requesting quotes. List the package contents and any extra fittings so a pump-only quote is not mistaken for the same scope.
Verdict on pump replacement cost
Start with the sourced pool pump replacement cost range, then compare quotes using the exact model and the same written scope. Keep the source date and missing items with each sum. Cost formula QUOTE-2 keeps each source range separate from fitted quotes. Use local quotes for fitted costs. The artificial example shows addition, not market rates.
