Hayward vs Pentair

Quiet pool water and surrounding deck in natural light

A Hayward pool pump vs Pentair choice starts with exact model codes. Note the controller you have too. A brand name cannot prove that the pump fits the flow you need. It cannot prove that the controls work together. Check both before you choose.

Keep the model code with its voltage and curve. Note the revision and supported controls too. OmniX is Hayward's newer automation-ready family and control platform. Current Super Pump VS 700 OmniX and SuperFlo VST documents show why a family name is not enough. Controls can change between versions. Match the flow duty first. Then check the fitted scope and seller's warranty terms. These sources do not show that either whole brand is quieter, cheaper or more reliable.

Hayward pool pump vs Pentair: a source-led comparison

This comparison uses Hayward's current Super Pump VS 700 OmniX sell sheet, LITSPVS70026, and Pentair's SuperFlo VST SKU 342002 page. These sources describe the named versions. They are documented family examples, not ranked product picks.

RS-485 is a wired serial control connection. TradeGrade is Pentair's sales-channel product programme; its actual policy sets the applicable terms.

Check Hayward source example Pentair source example
Exact current identity SP2670020VSPX1, Super Pump VS 700 with OmniX 342002, SuperFlo VST with TradeGrade designation
Control information in source Universal Display; OmniX, OmniLogic and Universal Comms named Three programmable speeds with override and clock; RS-485 connectivity advertised
Remote-control condition OmniX app/gateway route; gateway sold separately Exact controller and supported revision must be matched
Hydraulic evidence Voltage/speed-labelled performance chart in sell sheet Correct exact-revision manufacturer curve required
Warranty question Stated partner-sale condition TradeGrade sales-channel policy

These examples are not the same size. Hayward lists a 1.65-0.85 total-HP range. The Pentair SKU page lists 2.2 THP under both voltage entries. Do not treat them as equal-horsepower rivals. Match the flow you need at the head in your circuit.

Pool pump vs Pentair control questions

Start with your control system and its software version. Write down what you need it to do. That might be start and stop, choose speeds or show remote status. Flow control is a separate task. Support for a start command does not prove that every app feature works.

Hayward's current brochure names Universal Comms for links to Pentair and Jandy systems. That is the maker's feature claim. It does not prove that every old controller works with it. Check the exact pair and software version. Ask which gateway or extra interface, if any, is needed.

Pentair's current 342002 page lists RS-485. Do not assign that feature to every SuperFlo VS or older VST drive. The archived SuperFlo VS manual describes its own digital-input route. Keep each claim with its model. Joining an old manual to a new SKU page can produce a set of features that no real unit has.

Compare performance at a stated duty

Use the pool pump size calculator to find required flow and record head. Note the limits of the filter and heater. Add the limits of other active devices. The chosen curve must meet the duty. Actual flow must also stay below each known maximum.

The Hayward sheet has separate speed traces and a trace marked 115V. Read the right one. For Pentair, obtain the curve that matches the offered unit's revision and voltage. A family's advertised maximum flow cannot replace that check. The maximum may occur at a head your pool does not have.

If the source lacks the point you need, leave fit unresolved. Do not rank a pump by zero-head flow. Do not scale one model's curve from another model's horsepower. The flow guide explains what to record with a flow and head reading.

Connections and retrofit dimensions

Measure where the suction and discharge pipes meet the pump. Note the union type and space needed for service. A retrofit claim applies to a stated layout. It does not cover every pad with that old brand. The same pipe-size label does not prove that union threads or seal faces match.

Hayward's current sheet has a size drawing and lists 2-inch unions for this example. Pentair describes SuperFlo VST as an option to replace Super Pump and existing SuperFlo layouts. Check the drawing against your pad. Do that before a quote assumes no pipe changes are needed.

A full quote should state any pipe or control changes. Use the replacement-cost worksheet to keep those costs visible. This page gives no wiring or suction-redesign steps.

Certification and source conflicts

Check the exact model and voltage in EPA's dataset. A brand name alone is not a match. The certification guide shows why the same family can have different voltage rows.

Hayward's current brochure prints a WEF range of 11.9-8.9. The EPA entries read on the check date for SP2670020VSPX1 list 11.700 at 115V and 8.900 at 230V. The higher figures disagree. This page does not silently substitute the brochure's larger number for the certification record or claim a new certification result.

The cause of the mismatch is not known here. Check the offered revision against both records. Keep the document number and EPA row with any efficiency claim. Do not average the two figures. Ask the maker to resolve which record applies before using the disputed figure in a choice.

Warranty channels and installed scope

The Hayward warranty statement has a condition tied to a Totally Hayward partner sale. Check the full current terms for the offer. A headline number of years does not prove that you qualify. It does not show which labour is covered or what is excluded.

Pentair's TradeGrade policy sets terms for designated products and online sales. The current page calls SKU 342002 TradeGrade. An ecommerce-prefixed code may have different terms from a dealer code. Check the actual code and sale route.

Keep the seller and model code with the written warranty. This technical comparison does not endorse a seller. Purchase cost is also separate from running cost. Use measured schedules to compare running cost. A gap in WEF alone does not show how much your bill will fall.

Trade-offs by existing setup

If you already have a control system, a documented match removes one unknown. That benefit belongs to the exact pair. It does not make every pump of the same brand the right size. A good controls match still needs a good curve match.

For standalone use, check the local panel. See how its schedule and override work. Ask whether remote use needs extra parts or an account. Include those needs in the quote. An app feature may add little if the local panel already does the task you need.

For a retrofit, check size and the allowed power supply first. Good controls cannot fix a bad curve match. A good curve cannot prove that the controls will work. Leave each unresolved check visible instead of using a brand score to hide it.

Build a record for the offered unit

Start a page for each quote. Put the full model code at the top. Add the suffix exactly as printed. Save the source page and its check date. If a seller lists only a family name, ask for the code before you compare it with the other offer.

Next, attach the curve you used. Mark the required flow and head. Note the speed and voltage shown on that trace. If you used a measured duty, keep its date and valve state. A point from a different pool does not establish the duty for yours.

Put controls on a separate line. Write the existing controller's full name and version. Name the functions that the quoted pair supports. Include the document that supports the claim. A seller saying that it is compatible is less specific than a list of supported tasks.

Finish with scope and terms. Note any gateway and fitting work. Keep the warranty document with the seller's offer. This record makes a later change easy to spot. If the model code changes, repeat the checks for that code rather than carrying the old answers forward.

The result may be a shortlist with an open item. That is useful. For example, one unit may have a clear curve match but an unresolved control link. The next step is to answer that one question. It is not a reason to guess that a shared brand will solve it.

Our methodology

We read the current model pages and control claims. We cross-checked them with EPA records. We kept the WEF disagreement visible and labelled old manuals as archived.

No pumps were installed or tested for this page. We did not measure noise or long-term reliability. This is a review of published facts, not a field test.

FAQ

Is matching the controller brand enough?

No. Check the exact pump and controller pair, including its software. A family name can span versions with different controls. List the tasks you need and find support for each one. Then check the flow duty on its own. A shared logo does not prove either match.

Can I use an older curve for a new family revision?

Only if the maker states that the curve applies. Similar names and equal horsepower do not prove it. Keep the curve's source and revision. Note model and speed alongside voltage. If the needed curve is missing, leave fit open. Do not draw a new curve from the family name.

Which brand has the lower running cost?

Compare input power at the same duty using measured or suitable published data. Add your schedule. Brand alone cannot answer it. Use the kWh calculator once flow and pool service match. Your tariff and running days then set the cost.

If your above-ground project replaces the filter as well, compare the pump-and-filter packages before choosing a pump brand. Use the package's system-flow basis and included fittings to define the job.

For the exact older W3 offers, use the Hayward model comparison. It keeps MaxFlo, Super Pump and TriStar separate from the newer OmniX example discussed here.

Verdict on Hayward versus Pentair

Choose the Hayward pool pump vs Pentair setup with a proven curve match. Check controls and sale terms too. Keep source conflicts visible. These exact-model documents can help settle those checks. They do not show a winner for either whole brand.
